How do I know if I need braces?

• Crowding: not enough room for the teeth to fit in the dental arch
• Spacing: too much room, leaving gaps between teeth
• Tilted teeth: teeth angled forward or backward
• Protruding teeth: top teeth sit too far ahead of the bottom
• Overbite: top teeth cover the bottom teeth too much
• Underbite: bottom front teeth sit ahead of the top
• Crossbite: top teeth tuck behind the bottom teeth
• Open bite: top and bottom teeth don't meet
• Jaw growth discrepancies: upper or lower jaw over- or under-developed

We encourage a visit at least every six months to stay ahead of serious dental problems. Our dentists give you a customized hygiene plan to keep your smile healthy and bright, and every periodic exam includes an oral cancer screening.

A cavity keeps growing until it's treated, so we recommend filling it as soon as possible. The two most common materials are composite (tooth-colored) and amalgam (silver-colored, a metal alloy containing mercury, silver, tin, copper and zinc).

We favor composite resin fillings for both front and back teeth. They look natural, blend with your enamel, strengthen the repaired tooth, and require less removal of healthy tooth structure than amalgam. If you'd like existing amalgam fillings replaced with composite, we're happy to do that.

Crowns, or caps, cover teeth weakened by decay around old fillings, or teeth that are badly damaged, chipped, discolored or misaligned. We offer highly aesthetic all-porcelain crowns such as IPS Empress and zirconia. When we prescribe porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, we use FDA-approved high-precious alloys with gold beneath the porcelain, rather than nickel-based metals that can cause allergic reactions.

A bridge, or fixed partial denture, replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth set between crowns on the neighboring natural teeth. It's permanently cemented, so you never have to remove it. We build bridges from porcelain or porcelain fused to metal, usually gold.

Implants are durable, permanent tooth replacements for teeth lost to severe decay, root canal failure, periodontitis, injury or excessive wear. In most cases they're extremely successful at restoring the natural look of your smile.

A lower-cost alternative to bridges or implants for replacing one or more missing teeth. Partials are removable and are made of a metal framework, artificial teeth and a resin base. We also offer metal-free partials in acrylic and flexible Valplast.

For patients who have lost all their natural teeth, complete dentures restore your smile, support your facial muscles and give a younger appearance. Modern dentures are comfortable, durable and functional, so you can eat and speak with confidence.

Periodontal diseases are infections of the tissue that supports your teeth. The two major stages are gingivitis (less severe) and periodontitis (more severe). Diagnosed early, gum disease can be treated successfully, and we perform scaling and root planing in our office. Advanced cases may be referred to a periodontist for surgical treatment.

An injured or diseased tooth doesn't always need to be pulled. Endodontic treatment, or root canal therapy, usually takes one or two visits and can save your natural tooth. We strongly recommend restoring the tooth with a crown afterward. Our office is calm and relaxed to keep you at ease throughout.

Beyond health and strength, most patients care about how their smile looks. Cosmetic dentistry addresses discolored or stained teeth, minor misalignment (small gaps, crookedness, tilting or crowding) and damaged teeth (chips, fractures and cracks).

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells bonded to the front of your teeth. They can mask severe discoloration, damage, misalignment or poorly shaped teeth, and can be made from composite resin, acrylic or porcelain. They take two visits, one to prepare and one to place, and last much longer than bonding.

If a tooth can't be saved, we can remove it in our office. For severely impacted teeth, or if you'd prefer general anesthesia, we'll refer you to a reputable oral surgeon.

Safety and sterility come first. Instruments are cleaned and sterilized in high-pressure autoclaves, and surfaces are regularly sanitized with hospital-grade disinfectants.
